LUSITANO RETREAT — Pétanque French game, now played internationally. Players: Singles: 2; doubles: 4; triples: 6 CHOSEN VERSION: Beginner pétanque; marked boundaries and dead-jack cases must be explained before play. EQUIPMENT 1. One small jack 2. Three boules each in singles/doubles; two each in triples 3. Throwing circle and measuring tape SETUP 1. Choose clear gravel or another suitable informal surface. Toss for the starting team. 2. Stand in the circle and throw the jack 6–10 m, then the first boule. HOW TO PLAY 1. Keep both feet within the circle and on the ground until the boule lands. 2. The other team plays; thereafter the side without the closest boule keeps throwing until it gains the point or exhausts its boules. 3. If one side has no boules left, the other plays all its remaining boules. 4. Measure only after balls stop. The scoring side begins the next end from the jack’s location. SCORING 1. After all boules, only the closer side scores: one per boule closer than the opponent’s nearest. 2. Equal closest distances: alternate until broken while both have boules; if neither has any left, the end scores zero. 3. A jack out of play: both sides still holding boules, or neither, means a void end; if only one side has boules, it scores one per remaining boule. WINNING: First side to 13 points. AT THE RETREAT Keep the throwing lane clear; metal boules are not thrown towards people. A soft-boule demonstration is a separate adaptation, not regulation equipment.
