LUSITANO RETREAT — Go — 9 × 9 introduction China; also long-established in Korea and Japan Players: 2 CHOSEN VERSION: Chosen BGA quick-reference teaching rules, including 7-point compensation; not the 7½ tournament default. No handicap in the first teaching game. EQUIPMENT 1. 9 × 9 intersection board 2. Black and white stones; bowls for captures SETUP 1. Start empty. Black moves first. Place stones on intersections, including edges and corners, never inside squares. HOW TO PLAY 1. Alternate placing one stone or passing. Placed stones do not move. Orthogonally touching same-colour stones form a chain; diagonal contact does not join chains. 2. An empty neighbouring intersection is a liberty. Remove enemy chains when their last liberty is filled. A move leaving your own chain without liberties is forbidden unless removing enemy stones creates liberties. 3. Do not recreate an earlier position after one of your previous turns; this forbids immediate ko recapture. 4. On passing give the opponent a stone for their captures. Two consecutive passes end play; White passes last, adding a third pass if necessary. Agree and remove dead stones as captures; if disputed, resume play. SCORING 1. Use the BGA quick-reference territory method: enclosed empty intersections plus captured stones and pass stones. White receives 7 extra points. Neutral intersections score neither side. WINNING: The higher final score wins; equal totals draw. AT THE RETREAT Offer a quiet table and demonstrate one capture before starting.
