LUSITANO RETREAT — Chinese chequers / Sternhalma Germany; the English name does not indicate Chinese origin Players: 2 for this introduction; sets also support 3, 4 or 6 CHOSEN VERSION: Two-player, ten-counter short-jump game. Other player counts, anti-blocking and target-camp restrictions require agreement. EQUIPMENT 1. 121-hole six-point star board 2. 10 marbles or counters per player SETUP 1. For two players, fill two opposite ten-hole triangular points with different colours. The opposite starting triangle is your destination. Choose a starter and alternate. HOW TO PLAY 1. Move exactly one counter each turn. Either step to an empty adjacent hole along any of the six board directions, or jump over one immediately adjacent counter into the empty hole immediately beyond. 2. Jump over either colour. You may continue a chain with the same counter and change direction between jumps; stop when you choose. Do not combine a step and jump in one turn. 3. Jumped counters stay on the board: there are no captures and jumping is optional. Use ordinary short jumps, not the separate long-jump variant. 4. Aim to bring all ten into the opposite triangle. For friendly play do not deliberately leave a counter at home solely to prevent the opponent finishing; pause and resolve such blocking with the host. SCORING 1. No point total: count how many of your ten counters have reached the target. WINNING: First to occupy all ten destination holes wins. AT THE RETREAT A reclaimed tabletop can hold a painted portable board; avoid loose small marbles around young children. SOURCES George I.
